The Three Reasons People Procrastinate

You’ve been here before.

You set your goals with the best of intentions. You believed in it, felt passion for it and knew you could accomplish it. You literally felt on fire for the action steps you made.  And then you went home. Tomorrow is the day you said. Today I’m going to share with you what research shows are the top three reasons why people fail to finish their goal. And we are going to reach those Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs) together. If you want it bad enough, nothing can hold you back.

1) Fear of Judgment.

When O.P. first started dealing in Real Estate, he was told that his friends would scoff and judge him. Real Estate? Oh, the headaches and the market will just go down and the tenants! Why not just keep working hard? In 50 years, surely he could scrounge up enough income to retire on a fixed income and live a lavish life of luxury with Canned Tuna and Water Crackers?

It would have been easy to prolong achieving his goal to avoid the judgment of friends and family. There are people in your life who do not want you to get better. They’ll tell you you’re fine the way you are and encourage you to stay who you are! Thank them for their advice and remember that they will one day be someone else’s peer. Their judgment doesn’t matter.

2) Fear of setting standards that are too high.

Sometimes it’s not failure, but success that makes us take pause and avoid completing something. We are scared that by doing something so amazing, we might set impossible standards for future goals and objectives. Some of us may even hold back our greatest strengths for fear that others may also expect that same level from us in the future.

When you set a goal for yourself, imagine you are Mike Tyson’s sparring partner (preferably the one he doesn’t bite the ear of). He doesn’t need someone to just beat the crap out of and neither do you. You need someone or in this case a goal that will drive you.

3) Fear of new goals affecting our “fun”

Many of us choose not to make changes in our patterns because we are scared what changes will mean to our way of life. Working out means sore muscles. Letting go of loser friends means losing Friday Night options. Stepping up at work means less time for Instagramming your Facebooked Snapchats.
